Description
My day doesn’t get started until I have my coffee in hand. It was a natural progression that I would be drawn to create a coffee hand and body soap recipe. To get as much “coffee” into this as possible, the water base is actually a strong brewed coffee, which is then layered with coffee butter and a coffee fragrance oil. To really punch up the coffee angle and to provide scrubbing properties, coffee grounds are combined with the soap just before pouring into the molds.
This soap can be used to exfoliate skin in the shower but it really shines in the kitchen as a hand soap. The coffee grounds provide scrubbing power while the coffee component cuts food odors (like onion and garlic) from busy hands. It really works!
• Coffee butter contains coffee seed oil which is thought to block enzymes harmful to skin and to add emollient properties to soap.
• Coffee grounds provide an exfoliating-like property; grounds from the brewed coffee are used as well as freshly ground coffee beans to increase the coffee experience.
• Grapeseed oil is thought to preserve the natural moisture in mature skin.
Please note: Use of this soap in the shower will result in coffee grounds being released as the soap wears down, in case you’re wondering what all the small black bits are on the shower floor. We just don’t want anyone to be surprised by this.
One last word: Lard! Yes, lard. It’s one of the true “original” soap ingredients, back in the day when ancient Babylonians figured out that combining animal fats with alkaline ashes somehow combined to make something that cleans bodies. Lard contributes to a hard bar of soap with creamy lather and provides emolliency.
